DC’s newest fitness and lifestyle complex celebrates grand opening this weekend

The folks behind Vida Fitness, Bang Salon, and Aura Spa will host a grand opening celebration on Saturday for their new fitness and lifestyle complex at The Yards. In addition to avidacardio light show and live DJ, there the event will include circus acts. That’s right – circus acts!

The complex, which opened on October 2, is the newest location for Vida Fitness and its affiliated concepts Bang Salon, Aura Spa, and the Penthouse Pool & Lounge. It sounds pretty awesome:

VIDA Fitness at The Yards includes the club’s full suite of deluxe services, well-appointed facilities, state-of-the-art equipment and more than 100 customized exclusive classes with fresh additions that are unique to this location. The Experiential Cycling Studio offers cyclists an immersive experience in real world biking situated in a tri-level, stadium-seating atmosphere with 30 stationary cycles. The Synrgy 360 globular multipurpose exercise apparatus presents a full-service training nerve center that can be individually tailored to exerciser goals focusing on interval training and functional movement. The Hot Yoga Studio provides an intensified heat environment with a specially designed, wall paneled insulation temperature-warming system in a 1,500-square-foot studio space. Well-appointed, gender-specific European sauna and steam rooms are located in both the men’s and women’s locker rooms. New top line enhancements introduced at TheYards location include cutting-edge Concept2 indoor rowers and Woodway treadmills. Also new to VIDA Fitness at The Yards is a 1,000-square-foot Kids Zone where parents may closely watch their children play. Child babysitting assistance is also available.

Washington, D.C. – The American Diabetes Association’s first DC Tour de Cure bike ride to stop diabetes, which will wind through traffic-free streets starting at Freedom Plaza (route guide attached), is fast approaching. The event will bring awareness to the increasing incidence of diabetes nationally, and support over half a million people living with diabetes in the DC metro area. The event will also offer free health screenings to the public, a farmers market, Zumba and advice from doctors and pharmacists at the Stop Diabetes Village at Freedom Plaza.

Diabetes prevention and education efforts will be a major focus of the day. Riders will start the day with breakfast and a rousing send-off from Freedom Plaza, and return to a post-ride celebration with food, entertainment, and therapeutic massages. The ride, meant for cyclists with varied experienced levels, will have three fully supported routes. The routes will run through scenic, traffic-free streets in Washington, D.C. and continue on open roads in Montgomery County, MD.

The Tour de Cure aims to raise critical funds for diabetes research, education and advocacy. Each year, Diabetes kills more people than AIDS and breast cancer combined. Tour de Cure riders participate to recognize the nearly 26 million Americans living with diabetes and to encourage cycling as a means of disease prevention.

Washington, DC – Enjoy the beautiful weather this autumn while getting into shape. Every Tuesday evening in September and October, instructors from VIDA Fitness will conduct a different workout in The Park at CityCenter (corner of 10th and I streets NW) starting at 6:00 p.m. (weather permitting). The Toned Up Tuesdays program is free and open to the public in an effort to promote a healthy, sustainable lifestyle in the nation’s capital. Participants will receive fitness swag from CityCenter DC, City Sports and Flo Activewear as well as healthy snacks, shakes and special offers from Protein Bar, 2armadillos and Healthy Bites.
The dynamic programming for this fall’s Toned Up Tuesdays in The Park at CityCenter includes:
September 9 – Fierce Funk (45 minutes): Fierce Funk is a new, exciting dance-fitness program founded by Pepper Von, one of the most respected and creative dance-fitness practitioners. Pepper’s creation combines a street style funk movement with a contemporary hip-hop feel, for an inspiring, fun and complete workout. His vision is for instructors to bring a sense of fun, empowerment, passion, energy and a philosophy of love toward others to their classes through dance and fitness movements to energizing music. The Fierce Funk culture is not just fitness and dance, it is a moving energy intended to refresh the spirit with fun, fulfillment and love so Fierce Funk participants are more healthy and happy.
September 16 – Power Yoga (45 minutes): Designed to build strength while increasing balance, flexibility, and endurance. Expands on the sequences of Vinyasa to incorporate more challenging arm balances, inversions, and twists in conjunction with deep breath to detoxify the body.
September 23 – Boot Camp (45 minutes): VIDA Boot Camp is an intense calorie burning program providing fun, creative, and challenging moves that keeps participants focused, empowered, and constantly moving towards their fitness goals. Workouts include a wide variety of constantly changing circuits including drills, games, obstacles, plyometrics, relays, weighted supersets, and partner training.
September 30 – NO TONED UP TUESDAYS ON SEPTEMBER 30th
October 7 – Zumba (1 hour): Combines Latin dance moves with interval and resistance training for a full-body, rhythmic workout. You’ll move through salsa, mambo, cha-cha, cumbia, merengue, hip-hop, and belly dancing on your way to one of the most satisfying cardio workouts you’ve had in years.
October 14 – Power Yoga (45 minutes): Designed to build strength while increasing balance, flexibility, and endurance. Expands on the sequences of Vinyasa to incorporate more challenging arm balances, inversions, and twists in conjunction with deep breath to detoxify the body.
October 21 – Conditioning (45 minutes): Fast-paced class with a variety of cardio combinations, calisthenics and plyometrics. Conditioning utilizes interval training to combine a series of high intensity spurts to increase power with lower intensity active exercises to continue burning calories and improve cardiovascular endurance. This class is an excellent training tool for athletes, runners, or anyone looking to obtain a high level of personal fitness.
October 28 – Yoga (45 minutes): Yoga is an opportunity for gentle movement, stretching, simple breathing exercises and seated meditation. It is ideal for learning beginner poses, relaxation techniques and terminology.

Xtend Comes to Old Town

After much anticipation, Xtend Barre Old Town (1701 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA 22314) will open on Saturday, xtendwelcomeJune 14th. The newest location of this global fitness franchise (with studios in the U.S., Canada and Brazil) is right in the heart of Old Town and walking distance from the King Street Metro (drivers beware…make sure to allot enough time to find street parking or park in a garage).

The lovely ladies at Xtend Barre Old Town hosted a fun sneak peek event last night, complete with a barre class taught by the founder of Xtend Barre herself, Andrea Rogers. A former professional dancer turned certified Pilates instructor, Andrea created a fun workout that blends dance choreography and Pilates principles. And it’s no joke – you will sweat, breathe, and feel the burn.

The studio itself is gorgeous and bright, with welcoming floors and chic lobby furniture. Studio owner Natalie Strahorn discovered barre while living in New York and is excited to bring her passion to the Old Town community. She and her staff graciously lavished us with goodies after class, including frozen yogurt from Yogurtini, juices from South Block Juice Co., cute barre tops and socks  (available for purchase at the studio), and these delicious Barre bars.
